Normally I will just
recommend the best product or service to meet the particular need
without bringing up the negative of a particular "wrong" choice.
However, in this case, because your domain registration is so very
important, a warning is in order. A lot of people will use GoDaddy
and never have a problem. They may even use Godaddy's hosting and
other services and have rave reviews. While their popularity can't
be denied (who can't like Danica Patrick!) their service can
have a few warts.
From domainnews.com
"ICANN is now taking action against
GoDaddy in order to stop them from locking down their customers for
a 60 day waiting period, after customers altered their Whois
information. For years, GoDaddy has been clearly infringing against
specific rules put into place by ICANN, the Internet overseeing
agency. By locking down their customers they forced many of them to
renew their domain names with GoDaddy..."
This actually happened to
me and I had to renew with them before I could get a domain
transferred out.
More from domainnews.com
"Another controversy which came to us from a reliable source
involves the case of a spam complaint made against one of GoDaddy's
domain registrants. Believe it or not, GoDaddy expects a
$199
“administration fee” as part of a series of steps
needed to make the problem go away."
Add to that a problem
with auctioning off names that apparently had trademark infringement
problems and you have a registrar that causes me more than just a
little bit of concern. You may use them and everything is going
fine. That's great. It's just that I have seen enough and had enough
personal experience with them to cause me to move.

So who is best
choice for domain registration?
My money is on
NameCheap.com - literally. I used to use AIT Domains and never
had any problems but NameCheap provides the best service at the best
price of all the registrars I have examined. After I tried GoDaddy
for a while, I transfered ALL of those domains to NameCheap.
