Website Hosting
Where you put your site on the internet can be as
important as what you publish on your website. I used to
be in the hosting business so I know a little bit about it; and
love to share what I learned. Here are some basics to help you get
started.
All Website Hosts are NOT Created Equal
Believe me when I tell you that some hosting companies
are good and some are bad. Very bad. I had an experience with one
hosting company that just could not, would not deliver. I gave them
every chance but outages, software foul-ups, lack of support, etc. just
got to be too much. So I transferred my domains and canceled the
account. Should be the end of 'em, right? Wrong!
While they were no good at providing service, they
were very good at billing for it - even after I canceled the account.
For months. In spite of repeated attempts to get a refund and stop the
monthly billing. Finally, after getting my credit card company involved,
I got my money back. And you know what? Months later, yet another
charge showed up. More hassle, more lost time.
Let this be a lesson to you. Choose your host
carefully. You can get a lot of info about the good, the bad , and the
ugly at
Webhosting Talk.
Here are the web hosting companies I can
recommend...
- Single Site Hosting With Marketing
Features
If you want all the bells and whistles in one
place, with plenty of support to go with it, this may be your best
choice. "Marketing Features" is an understatement. In fact, there
are free tools on this site you can use without being a customer.
You need to know about SiteSell.com no matter what your online
business.
This is more than simple hosting. You actually build a business.

- Single Site Hosting
Doing one site and need solid, reliable
hosting? You have a couple of choices depending on your particular
needs. Good choices for single site web hosting.
Look at Site5 It's the host we use for this
site. Need I say more?
Another host you may want to consider is
Bluehost.com They are known for their great support and lots of
people swear by them. (I don't have an account there) The pricing is
similar to Site5 but there is something you need to be aware of...
Caution - Bluehost features unlimited domains on one account.
While this is true, it can cause problems because they use addon
domains. An Addon Domain is a domain name that points to a different
subdirectory on your account. This gives you the ability to make it
look like an entirely different website. But it is not really a
separate website.
This makes Bluehost a great choice for single
domains but if you are going to have multiple sites, I would
recommend an account that has Web Host Manager (see below). This
allows you to set up domains, each with their own control panel.
Look at Bluehost
for great single-site hosting.
- Multiple Site Hosting
If you are like me, you need the ability to
host multiple domains in one place. Purchasing individual accounts
for each domain can get expensive (plus, it's unnecessary) so
consider a reseller hosting package. Again, Site5 is an excellent
choice. Read more about Site5 or
go directly to Site5
and click the resellers link to get more information on multi-site
hosting.
